We have been in communication with the Hillsboro Police Department regarding the safety of the area in front of the school in the mornings and afternoons, please be advised that citations can be issued for failure to comply. In an effort to ease the congestion, we are asking that ALL student drop-offs and pick-ups be in the West (back) parking area. SSG Robert Lee Shumaker II SSG and SSG Brent Mciver provided a presentation on CS technology in the military and gave a demonstration of the Packbot. This robot is a multi-mission tactical mobile robot developed and manufactured by iRobot. Another area of focus for the upcoming November 6 Referendum would be repairing the Middle/High School roof. The roof is a combination of Ballasted EPDM and Fully Adhered EPDM. Throughout the entire roof, there are tented areas (due to shrinking of the membrane) as well as many split seams which have been patched as age and fatigue of the material became more of a factor. Core cuts of the roof show the insulation is either wet or deteriorated throughout. The Elementary Gym roof is also a Ballasted EPDM roof that has evidence of shrinking, tenting and punctures. #FutureOfHillsboroSchools #HSDGoTigers

He has two sons, Jaxson and Harrison, and a very supportive wife, Rebecca. He enjoys spending his free time with family and friends, camping, and volunteering for the local charity tractor pull! When asked about his time on the school board, this is what he had to say: "I'm in my fourth year as a Hillsboro School Board member. I enjoy working with all aspects of making the District one of choice for our students, staff, and community. Making a collaborative effort with administration, staff, and students input to make our District stronger. Realizing I'm just a small fraction of making a difference in a students experience, I still love it! I chose to serve as a board member four years ago after the successful passing of a referendum. Being one of the chairs on the "yes" committee, I felt compelled to follow through with what we worked so hard for. As a district, we strive to provide our students with the highest level of education through our outstanding staff who continue to go above and beyond. Providing more curricular and non-curricular options and seeing them change our student's lives is the reason I serve on this school board. The most exciting part of the Hillsboro School District is seeing our staff, our community, and our students improve because of a strong school system. We're never too young or old to change people lives! Together with a united district and community, we can provide these amazing experiences for our students." Thank you for your dedication to our school board, Jason! We are so honored to have you! #HSDGoTigers #TigerProud #CelebrateSchoolBoard

School Board Appreciation Week continues today and we will be featuring the amazing Jo Peterson! Jo Peterson and her husband, Steve Peterson, have four children and three grandchildren. The three older children have graduated from Hillsboro Schools and their youngest daughter just entered second grade. Jo graduated with her Master Degree in Business and is currently working in Mauston at Mile Bluff Medical Center as a Database Support Specialist. When asked about her time as a school board member, this is what she had to say: "I have been on the Hillsboro school board for about two months. It is early for me, but I enjoy seeing the other board members and school administrations drive to make sure the schools are doing the best for the students. I chose to serve as a member because I feel being a parent to both graduates and a current student gives me a perspective that can positively impact the board. I see so many exciting things going on in our District everyday! The early childhood and 4k rooms look AMAZING! The Plus One program continues to be a great program (and I know our 2nd grader loves it!). We follow the Tiger Way not only at school but at home as well. It is a big deal to earn those Tiger Paws!" Thank you so much for all the positive energy you bring to our school board, Jo! We are very lucky to have you! #HSDGoTigers #TigerProud #CelebrateSchoolBoards

This year marks her 25th year as a public school educator in the School District of Reedsburg! I enjoy celebrating successes in our school district as well as enjoy the challenge of problem solving and the opportunity to provide excellent educational experiences for our students. I see serving on the board as a natural extension of my passion for public education. All kids are deserving of the very best strategies, resources, and teachers possible. The most exciting thing happening in HSD these days and everyday is the amazing work of our teachers and their students. There is incredible learning and achievement happening in Hillsboro schools. Go Tigers!" Thank you so much for everything you do Jenny. You're truly a blessing! #HSDGoTigers #TigerProud

As part of the November 6, 2018 referendum, the School District of Hillsboro is seeking approval for $3.7 million that will go towards facility improvements. Among the improvements is the replacement of the Middle/High School boilers. The white boilers were installed with the construction building in 1964-65 with an estimated life expectancy of 30 years. These boilers run at about 70% efficiency. With approval, boilers like those installed in the elementary school in 2014 (blue) will be installed. The new boilers are expected to run at about 88% efficiency! #FutureOfHillsboroSchools #HSDGoTigers

The music department added a new aspect this year to encourage positive behaviors by splitting the students into houses based on the Harry Potter novels! The students were given a personality test to split them into four houses, with each house sharing similar characteristics and strengths. The 6th graders have kept the original Harry Potter house names, and the JH students (7-8) house names are based on band and choral composers. They will be using class dojo to keep track of individual and house points. Check out these awesome pictures from their hat sorting ceremony!

Starting today, we will start featuring individual staff members and this Friday, we are shining the light on Todd Salisbury! Todd is the High School Math teacher and has been teaching in Hillsboro since 1999. This was his first job out of college (UW - Eau-Claire) and he knew from day one, that this is where he wanted to raise his family. Him and his wife, Wendy, fell in love with Hillsboro's small-town atmosphere. They have four wonderful children, Amy (attending UWEC), Nicci (High Schooler), Megan (High Schooler) and Brett (Elementary School). He loves spending as much time outdoors as possible. He also enjoys weight lifting after getting hooked on it in high school. He is a HUGE sports fan and loves all Wisconsin sporting teams - especially the Green Bay Packers (this may be the reason why his son's name is Brett!). He used to coach football and powerlifting and is currently coaching junior high track. A fun fact about Todd: He is not a very emotional guy and has a strong dislike of the Chicago Bears, but every time he watches the "30 for 30" ESPN special on the 1985 Chicago Bears, he can't help but get emotional! When asked why he enjoys teaching at Hillsboro, this is what he said: "I enjoy teaching at Hillsboro because you get to know every student on a personal level due to our smaller size. We also have a rich tradition of excellent academics and success in athletics along with other extracurriculars. All of this makes me proud to be teaching at Hillsboro my entire career." Thank you for being apart of our Tiger Team Todd! #HSDGoTigers

Last week, English 11 students held classroom debates. As the culmination of a unit on argumentation, teams of students researched both sides of a topic, planned opening statements, and debated the opposing team. Students had to thoroughly research both sides of the issue, as the side they argue is determined by a coin flip on the day of the debate. The students' debates combined both prepared argument speeches with impromptu question and answer "crossfires" of the opposing teams. The students who were not participating in that debate scored each debate to determine a winner.
