Students in US History 9 recently participated in a "Land Rush" activity to better understand various impacts the Homestead Act of 1862 had on America.
This activity was modeled after the Oklahoma Land Rush of 1889. After filing a claim, students raced around the school to find their 160 acre plot of land. Three lucky students were "sooners", or individuals who illegally entered the territory before the beginning of the race and three other students were speculators or individuals who could grab several pieces of land and choose the best plot.
Like the real land rush, not everyone who participated received a plot of land. Those that didn't find land had to buy it from the speculator. Students then used their piece of land to work through a variety of tasks to complete the activity! #HSDGoTigers
