Academic Decathlon

Academic Decathlon was founded in 1968 and has since grown into a national phenomenon in which thousands of students participate each year.

The competition tests knowledge across ten different subjects, and students participate in teams of nine alongside their peers, testing both their knowledge and ability to work effectively as a team.  Participants gain confidence in their abilities, learn to manage time effectively, and discover the joy of collaborative learning.

The current theme for the 2023-2024 decathlon season is “Technology and Humanity,” and explores the impact of technological advancements on society.

Beyond the tests, decathlon teams hone their skills in three additional events:

  • Speech: Each team member prepares and delivers an original speech on a topic related to the year's theme.

  • Interview: Students face individual interviews with judges, showcasing their critical thinking and communication abilities.

  • Essay: Teams collaborate on a research-based essay, demonstrating their writing skills and understanding of the chosen theme.

Hillsboro’s academic decathlon team placed 8th in the regional competition and was awarded the following:

Kaden Thompson - 1st in Scholastic level Speech

Ian Anderson - 3rd in Honors level Interview

Hannah Miller - 1st in Scholastic level Interview
