Students pose with visiting guest Benna Griffin

On Monday, May 11th, Hillsboro Alumni (Class of 2018) Benna Griffin spoke with Mrs. Hora’s English 11 class.

Mr. Griffin shared his experience pursuing his passion and obtaining his law degree from Hamline School of Law in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Students in English 11 have been reading the memoir Just Mercy, by Bryan Stevenson, which explores his experience as a lawyer defending disadvantaged clients, a novel that Mr. Griffin feels a deep connection to.

In addition to discussing the memoir and his own work in the public defender’s office, Benna spoke about the importance of finding your passion and taking the steps to realize your dreams, and helped define steps young people can take to pursue their passions, regardless of their present situation.

At the end of class, Mr. Griffin shared a personal story of a tie that was passed to him from a judge who mentored him during his education. Today, Mr. Griffin passed on the tie to junior Dalton Nowak.
