This summer, Hillsboro students Kailyn Endres, Laudy Schulz, and Alexis Stanek had the opportunity to participate in the Wisconsin Junior All-Stars of Music (WJAM) after being nominated by their choir teacher.
Following a two-day music camp in Wisconsin, more than 300 student-musicians from across the state, representing current 7th-10th graders, traveled to Honolulu, Hawaii. Students performed as members of a choir, orchestra, and two concert bands alongside a group of over 300 staff members, family, and friends. Retired Hillsboro choir director Paula Parker also served on the WJAM choir staff, making this her second time sharing this incredible experience with Hillsboro students.
The trip combined outstanding musical performances with opportunities to experience Hawaii's rich history and culture. Students enjoyed hula lessons, explored the Polynesian Cultural Center, experienced a traditional Polynesian feast and spectacular evening show, and hiked Diamond Head, an extinct volcanic crater, where they were rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Oahu and the Waikiki coastline.
This remarkable journey included a performance at Pearl Harbor. One choir member's father is currently stationed there, and the choir had the special privilege of participating in the flag ceremony. During the ceremony, WJAM members were presented with an American flag that had flown over the USS Arizona Memorial.
