As district students return to classrooms, so do the unmistakable sounds of the school year - the bell signaling class change, shuffling papers, the chatter and laughter of students at passing period, and the sound of instruction from teachers.
On the first day of elementary school, experienced educator Diane Stockwell took time in her 2nd grade classroom to help students establish comfort and community through team-building exercises. 
At the middle/high school, interventionist Linda Bisarek explains, "A lot of our beginning-of-the-year energy in this building goes into the transition years (6 and 9)--helping students with schedules, locations, and more. We want to make sure everyone gets where they need to be and understands the systems we have in place for a successful year."
The start of the school year often brings with it a sense of renewed possibilities: staff are rejuvenated after a well-deserved summer break, and students are excited to reconnect with peers and teachers.
For building principals, it is the culmination of a summer of preparation. "It's been a great start to the school year. While it is very warm in the building, students have been in good spirits and are having a positive attitude." Mr. Koopman, MS/HS principal, explains. "Our high school teachers are jumping right into learning and setting high expectations for their students. Middle school teachers are helping the students navigate new schedules and expectations. It's great to have the halls busy again!"
At the elementary school, Principal Lisa Gerke has been thrilled with the first days of school. "Our first day back at Hillsboro Elementary was filled with excitement, energy, and plenty of learning as we kicked off another great school year! Our theme this year is Game On! and we celebrated in true elementary fashion with a rally focused on trying our best, understanding that we will not always win, and learning and growing through challenges and obstacles. This year, we are excited to implement Imagine Learning–Illustrative Mathematics, a new math resource designed to build deep mathematical understanding through problem-solving, discussion, and real-world thinking. We are also entering Year 2 of implementing CKLA (Core Knowledge Language Arts), our ELA resource that builds strong foundational reading skills while expanding students’ knowledge, vocabulary, and understanding of the world."
